Which pregnancy test should you buy?
All home pregnancy tests look for the same hormone, hCG, which your body starts producing after a fertilised egg implants. The cheapest pack here is Rs 60 and the most expensive is Rs 7,999, and once hCG is high enough they are equally accurate. What the extra money buys is convenience and how early you can test. Every pregnancy test on this page is over 99% accurate from the day of your missed period when used correctly.
Strips (Rs 60 to Rs 399)
A plain paper strip you dip into a cup of urine. The cheapest option and the one most Pakistani clinics use. Two lines mean pregnant, one line means not. Buying a multi-pack makes sense because testing over several days is more informative than one test, especially if you are unsure of your dates. Midstream tests (Rs 250 to Rs 390)
You hold these directly in the urine stream, so there is no cup to manage. Easier and more hygienic than a strip, and still inexpensive. The Midstream Pregnancy Test is Rs 250; the Klear Rapid Midstream is Rs 390.
Imported Clearblue tests (Rs 4,999 to Rs 7,999)
Both Clearblue tests are midstream, and both cost more because they are imported. Clearblue Rapid Detection (2 tests, Rs 4,999) shows a plus or minus sign in as little as 1 minute, and its tip turns pink so you know you sampled enough. Clearblue Digital with Smart Countdown (3 tests, Rs 7,999) prints the answer on a screen as words, Pregnant or Not Pregnant, which removes the "is that a faint line or am I imagining it" problem that causes so much anxiety. Both can be used up to 5 days before a missed period, with lower sensitivity that early.
Ovulation kits
If you are trying to conceive rather than checking a late period, an ovulation kit is the more useful purchase. It detects the LH surge that happens 24 to 36 hours before you ovulate, so you know when your fertile window actually is. When to test
The day of your missed period is the reliable answer. Testing earlier can work, but a negative before your period is due tells you very little because hCG may simply not be high enough yet. Use first-morning urine, when hCG is most concentrated, and if you get a negative but your period still has not arrived after three or four days, test again.
Reading the result
On any test that shows lines, which is every test here except the two Clearblue ones, a second line however faint is a positive. Faint lines happen when hCG is still low, which is normal very early on. The Clearblue Rapid Detection gives you a plus or minus sign instead, and a faint plus counts the same way; the Clearblue Digital spells the answer out, so there is nothing to judge. What does not count on any of them is a mark that appears after the time window printed on the instructions, usually 10 minutes; that is an evaporation line, not a result.
