Walk down the shampoo aisle at any store in Pakistan and you will see forty bottles making the same three promises: longer hair, stronger hair, shinier hair. The prices run from a few hundred rupees to well over Rs 2,000, the ads all show the same slow-motion hair flip, and nothing on the front of the bottle tells you the only thing that matters: whether this shampoo suits your scalp.
So most of us buy whatever our mother bought, or whatever a TikTok said, and then blame our hair when it does not work. This guide fixes that. It explains how to actually choose a shampoo, compares what Pakistani and imported brands really cost (our own prices below are live; every other brand's price was checked at the brand's own site or a major Pakistani retailer in September 2026), and matches specific bottles to specific problems: oily scalp, dryness, hair fall, dandruff and chemically treated hair.

The rule that simplifies everything: shampoo is for your scalp
Shampoo's job is to clean the skin on your head. Conditioner's job is to look after the lengths. Once you accept this split, choosing gets easy. If your roots look flat and greasy by the second day, you have an oily scalp and you need a shampoo that cleans properly, even if your ends are dry.
If your scalp feels tight, itchy or flaky after washing, you need something gentler. Buying "for dry hair" when the real problem is an oily scalp is the single most common mismatch we see, and it leaves you with greasy roots and a heavy, coated feeling by evening.
Your scalp type also decides how often you wash. In Karachi humidity or a Lahore June, sweat and oil build up fast, and washing three to four times a week with a suitable shampoo is completely fine. The old warning that frequent washing causes hair fall confuses shedding you would have had anyway with the hairs that simply come loose in the shower.
Sulphates: the honest version, minus the fear marketing
Half the shampoo marketing in Pakistan right now is built on the word "sulphate-free", so let us settle it. Sulphates (SLS and SLES on the ingredient list) are cleansing agents. They are not dangerous, and for an oily scalp that gets washed every other day they are actually useful, because they cut through sweat, oil and styling residue quickly.
A Pantene with sulphates at around Rs 735 will clean an oily scalp better than a sulphate-free bottle at nearly Rs 2,000.
Sulphate-free shampoos earn their price in three situations: your scalp is dry or easily irritated, your hair is frizzy or curly and loses moisture fast, or you have had a keratin treatment or hair colour that harsh cleansing strips out.
If you spent thousands of rupees on keratin at a salon, protecting it with a Rs 1,900 sulphate-free shampoo makes sense. Two things jump out of this table. First, the gap between a good budget shampoo and a dermatologist-grade one runs past fifteen times the price, and the expensive bottles are usually the smaller ones. Second, local brands now cover the budget end of every category well. Imported bottles earn their price where the formula matters most: dandruff shampoos built around a proper active, and sulphate-free ranges made for coloured or keratin-treated hair.
If your scalp is oily and your city is hot
You need a clarifying wash, not a creamy one. Head & Shoulders Classic Clean and Sunsilk Black Shine both rinse clean without leaving a film, and at roughly Rs 680 to Rs 800 for 360ml they are economical for families that go through a bottle a month. If the greasy scalp comes with flakes, you need a dandruff active rather than a clarifying wash, and Head & Shoulders is the cheapest way to get one.

If your hair is dry, frizzy or rough
Dryness in Pakistan usually has two causes working together: harsh washing and heat styling, with hard tap water making both worse in many neighbourhoods. Dove Intense Repair at Rs 795 is the best of the mass-market options for this. If your budget allows, moving to a sulphate-free bottle keeps more moisture in the hair between washes: Vince's Ginger or Bamboo (Rs 1,895) locally, or the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo (Rs 2,999) with its matching conditioner.

If your problem is hair fall
Here is the sentence no shampoo ad will say: shampoo does not grow hair, because it sits on your head for ninety seconds and then goes down the drain. What an "anti hair fall" shampoo like Pantene's (Rs 735) genuinely does is reduce breakage by keeping strands smoother, so fewer snap mid-length.
That is worth having, but if you are losing hair from the root, the cause is usually inside: low iron, low vitamin D, thyroid issues, crash dieting or the after-effects of illness or childbirth. We stock Minoxin Plus Minoxidil 5% (Rs 1,500), a 60ml metered spray from Brookes Pharma; read the minoxidil guide first, because it needs months of daily use and is not for everyone. Choose a gentle shampoo like CoNatural Hair Growth (Rs 1,857) so washing is not adding breakage, then fix the cause, not the lather.
If you want a shampoo for the shedding phase while you sort out the cause, Bioxcin Forte Shampoo (Rs 5,250) is a Turkish herbal shampoo made for heavy shedding. Treat it as cosmetic support alongside fixing the cause. It will not correct low iron, a thyroid problem or pattern hair loss.
If your hair is not falling more than usual but simply looks thin and flat, that is a volume problem, not a growth one. If you have dandruff
Dandruff needs an active ingredient, not a herbal promise. Look for zinc pyrithione (ZPT), ketoconazole, piroctone olamine or selenium sulphide on the label. This is the one case where sulphate-free earns its price: it protects money already spent. Salon keratin in Pakistan costs thousands of rupees and a sulphate shampoo strips it in weeks. Follow it with No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner (Rs 11,950), and use Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector (Rs 10,200) once a week before washing.
Four mistakes that undo a good shampoo
- Washing with very hot water. It strips the scalp, triggers more oil and roughens the cuticle. Warm is fine, hot is not.
- Rubbing shampoo into your lengths. Lather belongs on the scalp. The foam that rinses through the lengths cleans them enough.
- Believing your hair got "immune" to a shampoo. Hair cannot build immunity. What changes is the season, your scalp, or product buildup. A monthly clarifying wash resets buildup.
- Heavy oiling the night before a harsh wash. Two hours of oiling before washing gives the benefit. Overnight oiling under a Karachi ceiling fan mostly feeds buildup, then you scrub harder to remove it.

Is sulphate-free shampoo worth the extra price?
Only for dry, curly, colour-treated or keratin-treated hair, or a scalp that stings with regular shampoo. For a normal or oily scalp, a standard shampoo cleans better and costs less than half as much.
Can any shampoo stop hair fall?
No shampoo can stop shedding from the root, because it does not stay on the scalp long enough to change anything underneath. Anti hair fall shampoos reduce breakage along the length, which helps hair look fuller. Root-level loss needs its cause treated: iron, vitamin D, thyroid, stress or genetics.
How often should I wash my hair in Pakistan's climate?
Oily scalp in summer: every other day, or daily if you exercise. Normal scalp: two to three times a week. Dry or curly hair: once or twice a week with a gentle shampoo. Let your scalp, not a rule, make the final call.
Why is my dandruff shampoo not working?
The usual reasons: it does not contain a real active (check for ZPT, piroctone olamine or ketoconazole), it is rinsed off too fast (leave it three to five minutes), or it is used once a week when it needs two to three uses. If a proper active used properly fails after a month, the flakes may be seborrheic dermatitis or fungal, and a doctor can confirm.
