HbA1c Test Price in Pakistan (2026): Normal Range and How to Read Your Report
What an HbA1c test costs across Pakistani labs, what your percentage actually means, and when a borderline sugar result needs a doctor.
The slip says HbA1c and the lab quotes you two and a half thousand rupees. The lab your cousin used charged sixteen hundred for the same thing. Then the report comes back with one number on it, 5.9, and nobody tells you whether that is fine or the start of something. Here is what an HbA1c costs in Pakistan right now, what your percentage is actually saying, and which results need a doctor rather than a worry.
Shop the picks in this guide
- Fybosim Natural Fibre Sachet, Rs 390, a daily fibre sachet for the eating changes that follow a borderline result
- Simfolic Myo-Inositol + Folic Acid, Rs 1,390, myo-inositol 2,000 mg for women managing PCOS alongside a raised HbA1c
What the HbA1c test actually measures
Glucose in your blood sticks to haemoglobin, the protein inside red blood cells. The HbA1c test measures what percentage of your haemoglobin is carrying that sugar coating. Because red cells live about three months, the result is a running average of your blood sugar over roughly the last two to three months, which is the whole point of it. A fasting sugar tells you about one morning. HbA1c tells you about your last ninety days, including the wedding season and the biryani you forgot about.
Labs in Pakistan also print it as glycosylated haemoglobin or glycated haemoglobin. Same test. Some reports add an eAG line, which converts your percentage into the mg/dL units a home glucometer uses.
HbA1c test price in Pakistan
The figures below are list rates published by Pakistani labs and booking platforms, checked in September 2026. They are not our prices and we do not sell lab tests, so treat them as a guide. Nearly every lab runs a discount scheme, so the number you actually pay is often well below the list rate.
| Lab | List price (PKR) | After typical discount |
|---|---|---|
| Health Diagnostic Laboratory | 1,600 | 1,280 |
| Ibn-e-Sina Clinical Laboratory | 1,750 | 1,225 |
| Dr. Essa Laboratory | 1,970 | 1,576 |
| Chughtai Lab | 2,400 | 1,800 |
| Islamabad Diagnostic Centre | 2,500 | 2,250 |
So the working range is about Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,500 at list, and roughly Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,250 once discounts land. Chughtai Lab lists the test at Rs 2,400 on a venous blood sample with same day reporting and no fasting needed.
Paying more does not buy you a more accurate HbA1c. What the extra buys is turnaround time, home sample collection and an online report. If a lab quotes you five thousand or more, look at the slip again. You are probably being billed for a diabetes panel or a health package rather than a single test.
HbA1c normal range and what your number means
The cutoffs below are the standard ones used by the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and by Pakistani labs.
| HbA1c result | What it means | What usually happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Below 5.7% | Normal | Retest on the schedule your doctor sets for your age and risk |
| 5.7% to 6.4% | Prediabetes | Diet and weight changes, retest every one to two years |
| 6.5% and above | Diabetes range | Confirmation on a second test, then a treatment plan |
Two things people get wrong here. The first is treating 6.5% as a verdict. Mayo Clinic is explicit that diabetes is diagnosed on a result of 6.5% or higher on two separate tests rather than one. The second is treating 5.9% as nothing. Prediabetes is the window where the number is still movable without medicine, and it is the one worth acting on. MedlinePlus advises retesting every one to two years once you land in that band.
Once someone is diagnosed, a level under 7% is the common treatment target for most adults, though your doctor may set a looser or tighter target depending on your age, your other conditions and how often your sugar drops too low. People with diabetes are usually tested at least twice a year.
Turning your percentage into glucometer numbers
If you own a glucometer, this conversion makes the report make sense. These are Mayo Clinic's estimated average glucose values.
| HbA1c | Estimated average glucose |
|---|---|
| 6% | 126 mg/dL |
| 7% | 154 mg/dL |
| 8% | 183 mg/dL |
| 9% | 212 mg/dL |
| 10% | 240 mg/dL |
An HbA1c of 8% means your blood sugar has been averaging around 183 mg/dL day and night for months, including while you slept. That framing tends to land harder than the percentage does.
Why this test matters more here than most places
Pakistan has one of the heaviest diabetes burdens in the world, and the numbers come from an HbA1c survey rather than guesswork. The Diabetes Prevalence Survey of Pakistan tested 18,856 adults across 378 clusters in 2017 and found type 2 diabetes in 16.98 percent of them and prediabetes in a further 10.91 percent. Put plainly, more than a quarter of the adults in that survey were either diabetic or heading that way.
Globally the picture is moving in the same direction. WHO reports that the number of people living with diabetes rose from 200 million in 1990 to 830 million in 2022, and that more than half of them were not taking any medication for it. Testing is the cheap part of this problem.
How to prepare, and when to book
No fasting. You can eat and drink normally, take your usual medicines, and go to the lab at any hour. This is the single biggest practical advantage of HbA1c over a fasting sugar test, and it is why so many doctors now open with it. If a lipid profile or fasting glucose is on the same slip, then that test's fasting rule applies to the whole visit and you go early and empty.
Tell the phlebotomist if you are pregnant, if you have had a blood transfusion recently, if you are on iron tablets, or if you have any known blood disorder. None of that stops you testing. It changes how the result gets read.
When an HbA1c result cannot be trusted
This is the part almost nobody is told at the counter, and it matters a great deal in Pakistan. HbA1c depends on your red blood cells behaving normally. When they do not, the percentage drifts away from your real blood sugar.
- Iron deficiency anaemia pushes HbA1c falsely high, so a woman with low haemoglobin can get a prediabetes reading that is partly her iron and not her sugar. If your report shows both, sort out the iron deficiency first and retest.
- Haemoglobin variants interfere with the test, and NIDDK notes they are more common in people of African, Mediterranean or South East Asian descent. Thalassaemia trait sits in this category and is not rare here.
- Kidney failure and liver disease can both produce false results.
- Recent or heavy blood loss, and recent transfusion make the average meaningless for a while.
- Pregnancy. HbA1c is not the test used to diagnose gestational diabetes. That is a glucose tolerance test, and your obstetrician will order it at the right week.
If any of these apply to you, a fasting glucose or a glucose tolerance test gives a cleaner answer, and a CBC alongside is what tells your doctor whether your red cells are the problem.
If you have PCOS, read your HbA1c differently
Insulin resistance sits underneath a large share of PCOS, which is why gynaecologists in Pakistan order an HbA1c along with the hormone panel rather than after it. A woman of 26 with irregular cycles and an HbA1c of 5.8 is a very different case from a woman of 26 with regular cycles and the same number, and the first one usually gets acted on sooner.
Myo-inositol is the supplement most often used alongside those lifestyle changes. Simfolic (Rs 1,390) pairs 2,000 mg of myo-inositol with 400 mcg of folic acid in one daily dose, and the brand positions it for hormonal and metabolic balance in PCOS. Our myo-inositol guide goes through what it does and does not do. It is a supplement rather than a medicine, so talk to your gynaecologist before adding it, especially if metformin is already on your prescription.
Your result came back at 5.9. What now?
Prediabetes is a warning with a lot of room in it. The levers that move an HbA1c are boring and they work.
Weight, but a realistic amount of it. Start by finding out where you actually stand with our free BMI calculator, then use the calorie calculator to set a daily target you can hold for months rather than three weeks. Our guide to losing weight healthily in Pakistan covers the food side in desi terms.
Fibre, especially the soluble kind. Mayo Clinic notes that soluble fibre forms a gel in the stomach that slows digestion and can help lower blood sugar, and puts the daily target at 25 g for women aged 50 or under and 38 g for men in the same bracket. Most people here eat nowhere near that. Daal, chana, oats, apples with the skin on and okra all count. If you struggle to get there from food alone, Fybosim (Rs 390) is a natural fibre sachet you mix into a glass of water; the brand says it helps maintain blood sugar levels that are already within the normal range, and our fibre supplement guide compares it with the alternatives. More on the wider digestive and gut range if that is the direction you want to go.
Sugar in tea and drinks. This is the fastest single change available to most Pakistani households. If you take three teaspoons twice a day, that alone is worth attacking before anything else. Our note on stevia covers the swap if you cannot drink chai unsweetened.
Walking after dinner. Twenty minutes, most nights. It is unglamorous and it is the habit most likely to still be running six months from now.
The short version
An HbA1c costs roughly Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,500 in Pakistan, needs no fasting, and reads your last three months rather than this morning. Below 5.7% is normal, 5.7 to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or above needs a second test before anyone calls it diabetes. If you are anaemic, pregnant, or carry a haemoglobin variant, tell your doctor before they read too much into the percentage. And if it comes back at 5.9, that is the most useful result you can get, because it arrived while the number is still yours to move.
