What every CeraVe cleanser has in common

CeraVe builds all of its cleansers around the same three ceramides: ceramide NP, AP and EOP. Ceramides are fats that sit naturally in the top layer of your skin and help hold it together, which is why a ceramide cleanser tends to leave skin feeling less tight than a harsh soap.

Every one we stock is fragrance-free and non-comedogenic, meaning the brand says it will not clog pores. That matters in Pakistan's humid months, when a heavy or perfumed wash can leave congested skin worse off. The difference between them is what sits on top of that ceramide base: extra hydration in one, salicylic acid in the other two.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser: for dry and sensitive skin

This is the green-cap bottle. CeraVe lists it for normal to dry skin, and it carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. It is a milky cream cleanser, so do not expect lather. It rinses off clean and leaves skin comfortable rather than squeaky.

The ingredient list on our product page shows glycerin near the top, plus hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, cholesterol and the three ceramides. CeraVe also uses what it calls MVE technology, which the brand says releases these ingredients gradually through the day.

Who should pick it

Choose it if your face feels tight after washing, if you get flaky patches in winter, or if you already use a strong active such as a retinoid and need your wash to stay gentle. It also suits people who wash their face often in summer and find foaming washes leave them dry by evening.

If your skin is very oily, you may find it does not feel "clean" enough. That is a texture preference more than a flaw, but it is worth knowing before you buy.

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser: for oily, acne-prone skin

This is the teal bottle, and it is the one to reach for if breakouts, blackheads or visible pores are your main complaint. The active ingredient is salicylic acid 2%. It also contains purifying clay to soak up oil, niacinamide to help calm the skin, and the three ceramides with hydrolysed hyaluronic acid to stop the acid from leaving you tight and dry.

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic. MedlinePlus explains that it treats acne by unplugging blocked pores and reducing swelling and redness, so pimples can shrink. The Cleveland Clinic describes it as an over-the-counter option that dissolves dead skin cells so follicles do not clog.

How to use it without drying your skin out

Shake the bottle, wet your face, work a dime-sized amount into a lather, massage gently avoiding the eyes, then rinse well. The label says morning and evening. If your skin feels dry or starts to peel, drop to once a day.

Be careful with layering. MedlinePlus warns against using salicylic acid on the same skin as benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, alcohol-based products or abrasive scrubs unless your doctor has told you to, because the combination can cause severe irritation. CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser: the one for normal skin

The blue-cap Renewing SA Cleanser also contains salicylic acid, but CeraVe positions it as a gentle exfoliating wash for normal and acne-prone skin that softens and smooths without disrupting the skin barrier. The brand does not print a salicylic acid percentage for it, and says it works on face and body.

Think of it as the in-between option: for someone whose skin is not dry, not very oily, but feels rough or gets the odd clogged pore. We only stock it as part of the three-cleanser bundle, not on its own.

What about the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser?

You will see the Foaming Facial Cleanser recommended a lot. CeraVe lists it for normal to oily skin, with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, and claims 12-hour oil control. It contains no salicylic acid.

Which CeraVe cleanser for your skin type

Dry or dehydrated skin

Hydrating Facial Cleanser, every time. Pair it with a moisturiser straight after washing while your skin is still slightly damp. Oily and acne-prone skin

Acne Control Cleanser. Be patient: the Cleveland Clinic notes that even with treatment, acne can take weeks to settle. If your skin gets too dry, use it at night only and switch to a gentler wash in the morning.

Combination skin

Many people with an oily T-zone and dry cheeks do best with two cleansers: Acne Control at night, Hydrating in the morning. The bundle makes this cheaper than buying singles. Use one cleanser per wash, not both at once.

Eczema-prone or very sensitive skin

The NHS advises people with eczema to wash with an emollient instead of soap and to avoid irritants such as soap and detergent. A fragrance-free cream cleanser like the Hydrating one is the gentler choice here. If your eczema is flaring, follow your doctor's plan first.

How to wash your face properly

The right cleanser still fails if the method is wrong. The NHS suggests washing twice a day with a gentle cleanser, and the Cleveland Clinic recommends warm, not hot, water.

• Wet your face with lukewarm water first.
• Use a small amount and massage in gentle circles. Scrubbing hard does not clean better.
• Rinse well, especially along the hairline and jaw, then pat dry with a clean towel.
• Moisturise while skin is still slightly damp, and apply sunscreen in the morning.
• Do not pick or squeeze spots. The NHS warns this can cause scars.
