Best Baby Shampoo and Lotion in Pakistan: A Gentle Bath Guide
Baby shampoo and lotion in Pakistan: what makes a wash gentle, Aveeno vs Sebamed vs Johnson's, and a bath routine for hot, humid weather.
A newborn's skin starts life close to neutral, at a pH of roughly 6.3 to 7.5, and turns slightly acidic, to around pH 5, within the first two weeks. That figure comes from a review of infant skin barrier research, and it explains most of what makes a baby shampoo or wash "gentle". The same review notes that ordinary alkaline soap pushes skin pH up and strips its fats.
Add Pakistan's hard water, long humid summers and dry winters, and the choice of wash and lotion matters more than the label pictures suggest. This guide explains what to look for, compares the Aveeno Baby, Sebamed Baby and Johnson's products we stock, and covers a simple bath routine for hot weather.
Our quick picks
- Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Wash & Shampoo 354ml (Rs 3,695), a tear-free 2-in-1 for hair and body in a pump bottle.
- Sebamed Baby Shampoo 150ml (Rs 3,400), a mild, tear-free shampoo set at pH 5.5.
- Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion Fragrance Free 227g (Rs 2,995), our first choice of baby lotion for sensitive skin.

What makes a baby shampoo or wash gentle
The right pH, and no ordinary soap
Ordinary soap is alkaline. In one study described in the review above, washing infant skin with an alkaline soap at pH 9.5 changed skin pH and fat content more than a liquid or bar cleanser at pH 5.5. A European panel of paediatric and skin experts recommended liquid cleansers that are pH neutral or mildly acidic over traditional alkaline soaps for babies.
Water alone is not perfect either. The review notes that water does not remove oily residue well and, depending on how often a baby is bathed and the quality of the water, can dry the skin. That is worth knowing in cities where tap water leaves a white crust on the kettle.
So look for "soap free", "syndet" or a stated pH on the bottle. Sebamed builds its whole baby range at pH 5.5, which the brand says was developed with skin clinics for babies and toddlers. Aveeno's wash and shampoo is formulated without soap, sulphates, parabens or phthalates, according to Aveeno.
Fragrance free where it counts
Fragrance turns up in a lot of baby products, and the NHS steers parents away from it in two places. Its advice for cradle cap is to avoid soap, adult shampoos and products containing fragrance or perfume, and its heat rash page says not to use perfumed creams.
Read labels closely here, because "gentle" does not always mean unscented. Aveeno's Daily Moisture Lotion is made without fragrance, while the Aveeno wash and shampoo has a light, fresh scent, and the Aveeno Calming Comfort lotion is deliberately scented with lavender and vanilla. For a baby with eczema or easily irritated skin, a fragrance-free lotion is the safer pick.
Tear free
"Tear free" means the formula is made to sting the eyes less than an adult shampoo. It does not mean it can go in the eyes. Hold your hand across the forehead while you rinse, and use plain water around the eyes. The Aveeno wash and the Sebamed shampoo we stock are both tear free.

Aveeno Baby vs Sebamed Baby vs Johnson's
Aveeno Baby: oat-based, best value for big bottles
Aveeno's baby range is built around oat. On its product page, Aveeno says the Daily Moisture Lotion moisturises for 24 hours, is hypoallergenic, suitable for newborns, and made without fragrance, parabens, phthalates or phenoxyethanol. It is light and sinks in quickly, so baby can be dressed straight after.
For washing, the 354ml pump bottle lasts longest. If you want to try Aveeno first, the smaller Aveeno Baby Daily Care Hair & Body Wash 250ml (Rs 1,995) is the cheapest wash we stock and is free from sulphates, soap and dyes.
Sebamed Baby: pH 5.5 for the whole routine
Sebamed suits parents who want one consistent, mildly acidic routine. The Sebamed Baby Gentle Wash 200ml (Rs 3,500) is soap free and can be added to bath water or used on skin and hair. The shampoo is for hair only, and the Sebamed Baby Body Lotion 100ml (Rs 3,000) is light with chamomile and allantoin. Sebamed also makes a soap-free cleansing bar if you prefer a bar to a liquid.
Sebamed costs more per millilitre than Aveeno, and the 100ml lotion goes quickly if you use it on the whole body every day.
Johnson's Baby Creamy Oil: for massage
Many Pakistani families massage babies with oil after the bath. The Johnson's Baby Creamy Oil 236ml (Rs 2,395) is the imported US version, a lotion and oil blend with aloe and vitamin E. It feels less slippery than clear oil and leaves fewer stains on clothes and sheets.
The NHS says after-bath massage can help a baby relax and sleep, and that any oil or lotion you use should be suitable for babies. On cradle cap, the NHS specifically advises against olive oil and peanut oil, which are still common in home remedies.
A bath routine for hot, humid weather
The NHS says you do not need to bath a baby every day. Washing the face, neck, hands and bottom ("topping and tailing") is enough on other days. In a Pakistani summer, a short lukewarm bath can still be the most soothing part of the day, and the NHS lists cool baths, loose cotton clothes and light bedding among the ways to ease heat rash.
- Get the water right. Warm, not hot. Run cold water first, add hot, mix well and test with your wrist or elbow.
- Keep it short. Five to ten minutes is plenty. The infant skin review notes that eczema guidelines recommend warm rather than hot water and baths of 5 to 10 minutes.
- Use a little cleanser. A small pump of wash is enough for a baby. Wash hair last, tipping the head back so suds run away from the eyes.
- Dry the creases. Pat, do not rub, and dry carefully under the chin, behind the ears, in the armpits and in the thigh folds, where sweat collects in summer.
- Moisturise while skin is slightly damp. Use a thin layer of lotion. In peak summer, many babies only need it on dry patches; in winter or in air-conditioned rooms, the whole body may need it daily.
Never leave a baby alone in the bath, even for a second, and the NHS says older children should not be left in charge either. Keep lotions and washes away from the nappy area if there is a rash: the NHS nappy rash advice is to avoid soap, baby lotion and bubble bath there and use a barrier cream instead. Our Nappy & Baby Care section has the zinc creams we stock.
How to patch test a new product
Even a gentle product can disagree with one particular baby. Before you use a new wash or lotion all over:
- Put a small amount on a small patch of skin, such as the inside of the forearm or behind the knee.
- For a lotion, leave it on. For a wash, lather and rinse as normal.
- Check the patch over the next day or two for redness, bumps, dryness or itching.
- If the skin stays calm, use the product as normal. If it reacts, stop and try a fragrance-free option.
Introduce one new product at a time. If you switch wash, lotion and detergent in the same week and a rash appears, you will not know which one caused it.
When dry skin needs a doctor
Some dryness, especially in winter, is normal and settles with a good lotion. Persistent rough, itchy patches on the cheeks, elbows or knees may be eczema. The NHS says to see a GP if your child has symptoms of atopic eczema or treatments are not helping, and to ask for an urgent appointment if the skin is:
- blistered, crusty, leaking fluid or showing spots filled with pus
- painful, swollen or warm
- suddenly worse or spreading
- accompanied by a high temperature or a baby who seems unwell
Cradle cap that does not improve after a few weeks, spreads over the body, bleeds or leaks, and heat rash that has not improved after a few days, should also be checked. For very dry patches between doctor visits, the steroid-free Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturising Cream 141g (Rs 4,395) contains 1% colloidal oatmeal. Use it as your doctor advises. Our eczema guide explains common triggers and gentle care.

Frequently asked questions
Which baby shampoo is best in Pakistan?
A soap-free, tear-free one, ideally pH balanced. Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo is the best value for daily use, and Sebamed Baby Shampoo suits parents who want a pH 5.5 formula. For a newborn, plain water or a small amount of a mild baby wash is enough.
Can I use adult shampoo on my baby?
It is better not to. Adult shampoos are usually stronger and more fragranced, and the NHS advises against adult shampoos and perfumed products on a baby's scalp when there is cradle cap.
Does my baby need lotion every day?
Not always. In humid summer months many babies only need it on dry patches. In winter, or if your baby sleeps in air conditioning, a thin layer after the bath helps. Babies with eczema-prone skin usually need regular moisturising, so follow your doctor's advice.
Aveeno or Sebamed: which is better for baby lotion?
Both are gentle. Aveeno Daily Moisture Lotion is fragrance free and gives you more product for the price. Sebamed Body Lotion is set at pH 5.5 and has a lighter feel. If your baby's skin reacts easily, start with the fragrance-free Aveeno and patch test it first.
Is baby oil better than lotion?
They do different jobs. Oil, or a creamy oil like Johnson's, is good for a massage and for locking in moisture. A lotion is lighter and easier in hot weather. Avoid olive oil and peanut oil on a baby's skin, as the NHS advises.
Can I use these products on a newborn?
Aveeno says its Daily Moisture Lotion and its wash and shampoo are suitable for newborns, and the Sebamed baby range is made for babies from birth. The NHS also says plain water is fine for a newborn's bath. Patch test anything new first.
