Most dandruff is driven by Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone's scalp and sometimes overgrows. Nizoral contains ketoconazole 2% (20mg per gram), an antifungal medicine that acts on that yeast, so it treats the cause of the flakes and itch rather than just washing them away.

This is the 2% European formula in a 100ml bottle, stronger than the 1% Nizoral sold over the counter in the US. You use it twice a week for two to four weeks, then once every week or two to keep flakes away, with your normal shampoo on the other days. It is for adults: the leaflet does not recommend it for children, and anyone allergic to ketoconazole or the other ingredients should not use it.

How to Use

Wet your hair, apply Nizoral to the scalp (or the affected skin) and work it into a lather. Leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes, then rinse well. For dandruff, use it twice a week for 2 to 4 weeks, then once every 1 to 2 weeks to stop it returning. If you use a steroid lotion on your scalp, reduce it gradually over the first 2 to 3 weeks. If it gets in your eyes, rinse with cool water. Stop and see a doctor if your scalp becomes very red, irritated, peeling or blistered, or if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Active: ketoconazole 2% w/w (20mg/g). Other ingredients: sodium lauryl ether sulfate, disodium monolauryl ether sulphosuccinate, coconut fatty acid diethanolamide, laurdimonium hydrolysed animal collagen, macrogol 120 methyl glucose dioleate, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, imidurea, hydrochloric acid, erythrosine sodium (E127), purified water.

Is this the 1% or the 2% Nizoral?

The 2%. Each gram has 20mg of ketoconazole. The American Nizoral A-D is 1%.

Can I use it every day?

No. Start with twice a week for 2 to 4 weeks, then once every 1 to 2 weeks. Use a normal shampoo in between.

Who should not use it?

Anyone allergic to ketoconazole or its ingredients, and children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or using other scalp treatments, ask a doctor or pharmacist first.
