Waterproof or washable? Decide this first

Before brands, settle the only question that matters in our climate. Waterproof formulas hold curl and refuse to smudge through humidity, sweat and the odd monsoon soaking, which is why most women here default to them. The cost is removal: waterproof mascara does not surrender to soap and water, and nightly rubbing is how lashes thin out over time.

Washable (regular) formulas are kinder to lashes and come off easily, but in June in Lahore they migrate under your eyes by afternoon.

The practical rule: waterproof for long days out, mehndis, and anywhere you will sweat or cry; washable for short indoor days and anyone whose lashes are already sparse. Match the mascara to your lash problem

Application: the five details that change everything

First, curl before, never after; curling coated lashes cracks the mascara and snaps lashes. Second, wipe the wand on a tissue once before your first coat: the excess sitting at the tube's neck is what causes clumps and blobs on the lid. Third, wiggle at the root, sweep to the tip; the root does the visual work.

Fourth, do two thin coats rather than one thick one, adding the second within thirty seconds, before the first dries, so they merge instead of flaking. Fifth, stop pumping the wand in and out of the tube; that pushes air in and dries the formula in weeks. Swirl it instead.

Hygiene: the part nobody respects until an eye infection

Mascara has the shortest safe life of any makeup product. The US FDA notes that manufacturers usually recommend discarding mascara two to four months after purchase: three months is the sensible mark, four at a stretch. The tube is dark, damp and touched to your eyes daily, which makes it a bacteria hostel, and old or shared eye makeup is a known risk factor for styes and eye infections.

Write the opening date on the tube with marker.
