Rosemary oil has become the most talked-about natural remedy for thinning hair, and demand for it in Pakistan has surged. But does it actually work, or is it just a trend? Here is an honest look.
What the evidence says
Rosemary oil is one of the few natural hair remedies with real research behind it. A frequently-cited study found that rosemary oil performed comparably to 2% minoxidil over six months for a type of hair loss, with less scalp itching. It is thought to improve circulation to the follicle and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The evidence is encouraging but limited — treat it as a supportive option, not a guaranteed cure.
How to use rosemary oil
Never apply essential oils neat. Dilute a few drops of rosemary essential oil into a carrier oil (such as argan or coconut), or use a ready-diluted rosemary hair oil. Massage into the scalp, leave for 30 minutes to overnight, then wash out. Two to three times a week is plenty. Do a patch test first, and avoid if pregnant.
Rosemary oil vs minoxidil
Minoxidil has the stronger evidence base and works faster, but some people prefer a gentler, natural route or use the two together. Whichever you choose, consistency over several months is what matters — hair growth is slow.
